Zardari forces closure of ‘Meray Mutabiq’ in Dubai
KARACHI: Under immense pressure from President Asif Ali Zardari on the Dubai government, ‘Meray Mutabiq’, the popular programme of Dr Shahid Masood on Geo TV, was banned from being telecast on Monday night from the Dubai studios of Geo TV. Dr Masood presented his programme from a different location without the use of his studio and technical facilities and announced that he had been stopped by the local authorities from presenting his programme. The popular talk show host also disclosed that he had received serious life threats from PPP leaders who had told him to come to Pakistan and conduct his programme from this country and then “we will see you”. In an exact replay of the Musharraf era, the use of influence and pressure on a foreign government by the president of Pakistan is a direct attack on the freedom of the press in Pakistan, the Geo TV management said in a statement on Monday night. It announced that the programme will still be telecast from a different location, as was done on Monday night.The management of Geo TV condemned the action of the Pakistani authorities to use the influence of a foreign government to deny freedom of expression and the Press. Monday night’s programme of Dr Shahid Masood featured Group Editor of The News Shaheen Sehbai and Editor Investigations of The News Ansar Abbasi, who condemned the action, and with one voice declared that the action would not force Geo TV to succumb to government pressure. Shaheen Sehbai expressed shock and regret and said the action showed that the PPP leaders had pushed the panic button in desperation otherwise there was no reason why they could not tolerate the voice of any journalist or any TV talk show host. Sehbai said the action by the PPP rulers was a direct negation of democracy and freedom of speech and would be resisted by all democracy and freedom loving people in Pakistan and round the world. In today’s world of instant communications, Internet, U-Tube, SMS, emails, Twitter and private phone-videos, such a ban was nothing but sheer stupidity. Journalist Ansar Abbasi said the journalists community had fought similar bans throughout their careers, specially under dictators, and they had always won and they will again win this time. But he said the regrettable part was that the curbs had been imposed by a government which called itself democratically elected. Dr Shahid Masood in his statement revealed that he had been receiving threats to his life and the banning of his show in Dubai was a clear proof of the desperation and panic in the government. He, however, expressed his determination to continue speaking the truth and exposing the corruption and wrongdoings of the government, without fear. Geo TV has always raised issues of public importance and had been in the vanguard of the movement for the restoration of the judges, against corruption of public money and for democracy and rule of law. These issues had resulted in a similar ban imposed by the former dictator General Musharraf for three months after the imposition of the Nov 3 emergency but Geo TV and its journalists and TV hosts stood their ground and finally saw the dictator disappear into the dustbin of history. The government action against Geo TV programme was immediately condemned by a wide spectrum of political leaders, media organisations and human rights bodies. Spokesman of the PML-N Ahsan Iqbal said it was an attack on the democratic freedom guaranteed under the Constitution and his party strongly condemned it. Chairman of the Pakistan Human Rights Commission Iqbal Haider called it a crude attack on all democratic norms and a violation of constitution which will be fought with full force.

I hate this Govt and its croonies but this unqualified Dr Masood, is the one who accepted MD PTV position from Zardari and stashed money into his brother’s account in the UK. I call him auto cue reader and would bet if he can present even one programme witout reading this long story from the auto cue. He needs to get training in journalism and study politics first.
How can anyone honestly think that one-sided abusive yellow journalism has ANYthing to do with freedom of expression? The freedom of press is one thing but cursing the head of state is another. If Shahid Masood and his coterie are so sure of what they say, they should go to the judiciary they are so proud of. No matter how loud or how many shout, the truth remains that shows like these do nothing but negativize and demoralize the public, as well as present a warped version of facts and need a shut up call.
No doubt, it is a shameful act by Zaradri and his advisors who are pushing the limits on all fronts. It reminds of Mushi’s era, inshah ALLAH soon Zaradri and his cronies will bear the brunt of their wrong doings.
I pray to ALLAH (SWT) to put all the corrupt politician into hell and help us rebuild our nation/country as envisaged by our great leaders Quiad-e-Azam Muhammed Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal.

Ather Abbas ? Nazeer Naji ? who are getting their stipends from Zardari and using their pens in writing stories about their godfather. May be Dr shahid is wrong but mostly he is telling truth. The whole nation knows about the corruption of Zardari and co, what is wrong in it. How any one can threaten any body, because he is powerful, what is inside in this govt going on,the whole nation knows it. There are many parallels between Zardari & Musharraff. Zardari ordered now Dr.SM banned on Media or Justice committed perjury & suborned perjury hiding many illegal Droned Attacks, started late night aggressive operations at Northern Areas moreover including Surrey Palace/SGS Cotecna or Musharraff’s Chakk Shahzad Farm plus used & transfer into own accounts under the Table US Aid & above all political murders. They should be in Kot Lukhput or Landhi prison if there was any-justice. Zardari rather than getting his programme banned could have opted for an easy way by providing details of his corruption and stashing money into his brothers account during his tenure as MD PTv. That would have been it for Masood.

President Asif Ali Zardari’s attack on his unnamed enemies has raised many eyebrows and caused apprehensions about a possible repeat of October 12, 1999 when the then prime minister had sacked the Army chief.

The presidential spokesman, however, does not see any such thing happening. “There is no such possibility,” Farhatullah Babar told The News, adding the PPP government does not apprehend any such thing.
President Asif Ali Zardari’s speech in Naudero on the second death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto has stirred a countrywide debate over the targets of his hostility. He did not mention in clear words whether it was the Army, the media or the opposition that was threatening democracy. Many, however, see it as a subtle attack on the Army after the reports pouring out of the Presidency suggest Zardari’s growing negativity about the establishment.
A senior columnist and political observer, while talking to this correspondent, feared as to what would happen if President Zardari makes an announcement about key changes in the military in a public meeting like the one he addressed in Naudero. Though the president’s spokesman finds it a hypothetical “concern” and simply ruled it out, the question does agitate many minds.
Without identifying the enemies of democracy and those accused of trying to destabilise the democratic set-up, President Zardari has furthered the conspiracy theories instead of removing confusion about those threatening his government. Farhatullah Babar repeated that the president’s target was neither the Army nor the media but the anti-Bhutto forces, which too were not identified. Babar said that the president made a political speech that had the required tone and tenor meant for the PPP followers.
Credible sources recently confirmed, although the presidency has denied, the president’s growing mistrust vis-‡-vis the top military leadership. In the absence of any clear explanation from the president, such behaviour on part of Zardari is incomprehensible.
Although October 12, 1999 events were the outcome of the known mistrust between the then prime minister and the Army chief following the Kargil adventure of General Musharraf, in the present scenario the incumbent Army chief, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, is widely respected for his professionalism and pro-democracy stance. General Kayani is not only highly popular within the Army but is also admired by political parties for the excellent role that he had played during the last year’s general elections and later on the occasion of the judges’ restoration.
In a situation when the Army as an institution has regained its respect and there is absolutely no sign of the military’s attempt to destabilise the democratic set-up, any effort by the president to make key changes in the Army top command would be extremely dangerous for the system. Last year, the government’s abrupt shifting of the ISI under the Interior Ministry was unacceptable to all and sundry, including the media, which resulted into the immediate cancellation of the government’s notification.
Perhaps foreseeing the dangers ahead, different views were being expressed in the media as a reaction to the president’s speech such as, “There are only so many possibilities about where the threat Mr Zardari keeps referring to can come from. With his public comments, Mr Zardari may in fact be alarming the persons in those institutions that they could be the target of impending attacks themselves and, therefore, need to strike before they are struck against. Our advice: put up or shut up. The president is supposed to be a symbol of the federation, a unifying force rather than a hyper-partisan figure fuelling conspiracy theories. More presidential, less political – that’s what the county needs from Mr Zardari.”
