Unfortunately we Pakistanis have always held a pride in being extravagant, as compared to our eastern neighbour.

I am an old man now, but recollect my earlier days in the 1950â€™s when, as a Merchant Navy Officer at sea, was regularly visiting Indian ports. Incidentally this became restricted after the 1965 war. As a movie fan, in Karachi I used to sit in the top class of Rs.3.00/3.50 ticket. The lower classes were patronised by rickshaw drivers etc. But in Calcutta, when I sat in that class, I felt completely out of place sitting with elderly aristocratic bald heads & bow ties. When I next sat in the Rs.1.25 class, I felt more in my place.

Again, at that time, I observed that in Karachi cafeterias, people would sit with full trolleys of pastries & patties in front of them: whereas in India, a customer would be found just sipping a single drink.

Again, in diplomatic functions, a few of which were attended by me on invitation of the Indian consulates at that port, besides drinks, they served only â€œdhal mohntâ€ or NIMCO type snacks, instead of the sumptuous dinners described in this report.
