Google Public DNS and Notes from the OpenDNS team
Google have launched its Public DNS services on Dec 03, 2009. Google describe its services as “Google Public DNS is a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider”. If you want to try Google DNS you can do so by using the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers. There are some other similar services available on the internet OpenDNS is one of them. We have already published about OpenDNS in the article “Protecting Your Kids from Inappropriate and Unsafe Content on the Internet”
OpenDNS have shown their concerns about the launch of DNS services by the Google. You can find their complete response here.
Here is a selection from the OpenDNS response
Google claims that this service is better because it has no ads or redirection. But you have to remember they are also the largest advertising and redirection company on the Internet. To think that Google’s DNS service is for the benefit of the Internet would be naive. They know there is value in controlling more of your Internet experience and I would expect them to explore that fully. And of course, we always have protected user privacy and have never sold our DNS data. Here’s a link to our privacy policy.
Google is very smart that now they want to get all the Internet usuage data of million of internet users in order to expolite the advertising potential.
