1425 Ex brigadier thrashes university professor over NRO brawl PakPoint.comA retired brigadier, the registrar of the Army-run National University of Modern Languages (NUML), on Thursday assaulted his respected professor colleague when the latter questioned the role of General Musharraf in brokering a deal with the PPP through the NRO.

The staff room discussion on President Asif Zardari’s alleged corruption and Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s role in granting a clean chit through the NRO, infuriated Brig (retd) Obaidullah Ranjha to an extent that he started hitting Prof Tahir Malik like a punching bag, leaving the latter virtually unconscious.

The incident triggered protests by the university students, who blocked the road and chanted slogans supporting the victim professor, Tahir Malik, and demanding the removal of the brigade of brigadiers, led by Rector Brig (retd) Aziz Ahmad, and assisted by the brutal Brigadier Ranjha and Brigadier Saulat Raza.

Tension gripped the university premises with all gates closed and cellphones switched off. Brig (retd) Ranjha, instead of regretting his act, said he wouldn’t care in case an FIR was lodged and defended the use of muscle power, saying: “If somebody disgraces the Army and its institution, what should I have done?” and asked the media to write whatever they wanted, adding: “I’m not answerable to you.”

The NUML administration reacts so loudly against the people questioning the Army’s role that it has taught a lesson to two civilian teachers in the short span of two weeks. The university’s journalism department, headed by Brig (retd) Saulat Raza, an ISPR veteran, recently sacked a journalist, Azaz Syed, who was in the department’s visiting faculty, after he did stories for his newspaper critical to the Army and the ISI.

The NUML is fast gaining notoriety as the recent audit report exposed rampant corruption with the auditor caught the rector and the university’s senior staffers committing different irregularities, obliging their near and dear ones, and fleecing money in the name of watchmen. The tension between the academic staff with civilian background and military background is growing by the day, making the situation worse.

As far the unfortunate thrashing incident is concerned, it occurred in the International Relations Department where Brig (retd) Ranjha was invited to attend a reception ceremony of the students where a discussion on the political situation started. As Ranjha criticised President Asif Zardari and lamented the country was being run by incompetent politicians, Professor Tahir Malik intervened, questioning why Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf brokered the deal with the PPP.

Tahir Malik, who is the son of the rector of the Islamic International University, said the politicians were always hounded and one should respect the mandate the public gave to them.

Brig (retd) Ranjha, whose appointment has also been criticised and declared illegal in the recent audit report, had also to face criticism on this count. “You have been appointed registrar without any advertisement. You don’t qualify for the position for not having the required academic experience of 15 years. You should set your house in order before pointing fingers towards the politicians. One should preach what one practices,” Tahir bluntly said, addressing Brig (retd) Ranjha.

Facing humiliation of his person and the criticism of the military’s top brass role in political bickering, in the presence of a TV journalist, sank Ranjha into chair, his shoulders drooped. But he took no time to stand up and leave the place, only to return within 45 minutes. As Ranjha arrived again, he took Tahir Malik along, saying some urgent business was to be discussed. As they walked away from the staff room, Ranjha started hurling abuses, hitting Malik on the face, kicking him on the upper part of the legs. But doing all this could not alleviate his anger. He then struck in his chest with head like a goat. Malik, who is a heart patient, fell on the ground.

In the meantime, the staff and students of the IR Department rushed to the spot, liberating Malik from the clutches of Brig (retd) Ranjha, eyewitnesses said. Dr Sohail Ahmad, head of the IR Department, who was an eyewitness, told The News he had witnessed this unfortunate incident. “Tahir is my faculty member and he was a clear victim,” he said. “We’ve demanded justice as the matter is now in the hands of the rector.”

The rector, when contacted, appeared to be very calm. Instead of going into the details of the incident and who the aggressor or victim was, he said an investigation into the incident is under way.

As far as the sacking of a journalist teaching in the NUML’s Journalism Department is concerned, it is yet another case in point of how the Army-run institution demonstrated intolerance towards freedom of expression. Azaz Syed, an investigative journalist, first had his house attacked on January 19, a week after a premier intelligence agency warned him against writing about its chief. Some days after this incident, Brig (retd) Saulat conveyed to the journalist not to come to the university for he had annoyed the institution of the Army, Azaz told The News.

Later, he was asked through the clerical staff of the department not to come till further orders. The students protested on the sacking of Azaz. Brig (retd) Saulat told the students that he could not bring him back because his own job would be in danger in that case, a student who gave audience to Saulat, later told The News. However, Saulat, when contacted for his version, denied anything like this had happened.

  • Dr. Farooq Shaikh, February 6, 2010:

Our innocent daughter Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a doctor trained in England, and Ismet, a Hafiz-e-Quraan, a mother of threekids. Aafia Siddiqui and her three children were seized by Pakistani intelligence agents from Karachi in March 2003, by the order of Bastard General Pervez Musharraf and taken to Afghanistan and handed over to the Americans, where she was imprisoned in Balgram and repeatedly raped, tortured and abused four years. A report in the Pakistani Urdu press at the time said that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and her three children were seen being picked up by Pakistani authorities and taken into custody.
Both the Pakistan government ruled by Bastard General Pervez Musharraf as well as US officials in Washington denied any knowledge of Aafia Siddiqui imprisonment.
Moazzam Begg, and several other former captives of the Americans reported that a female prisoner, “prisoner 650″, was held at Balgram Airbase in Afghanistan.
Until her plight was brought out in to the open and started to receive media attention. Trumped up allegations were then brought against her that she was involved in terrorism and a ludicrous claim that she managed to wrestle a gun off a US soldier and shoot at US officers.
Yvonne Ridley of Cageprisoners.com wrote about “Prisoner 650″ (Aafia Siddiqui) her ordeal of torture and repeatedly being raped for over four years. “The cries of (this) helpless woman echoed (with such torment) in the jail that (it) prompted prisoners to go on hunger strike.” Yvonne called her a “grey lady (because) she (was) almost a ghost, a spectre whose cries and screams continue to haunt those who heard her. This would never happen to a Western woman.”
On 4th August 2008, federal prosecutors in the US confirmed that Aafia Siddiqui was extradited to the US from Afghanistan where they allege she had been detained since mid-July 2008. The US administration claimed that she was arrested by the Afghani forces outside the Ghazni governor’s compound with manuals on explosives and ‘dangerous substances in sealed jars’ on her person. They further allege that whilst in custody she shot at US officers (none being injured) and was herself injured in the process.
On 7th August 2008 an article in the “The News” exposed some of the treatment Aafia Siddiqui had been subjected to whilst in American custody.
    · One of her kidneys had been removed.
    · Her teeth had been removed.
    · Her nose had been broken, and improperly reset.
    · Her recent gunshot wound had been incompetently dressed, was oozing blood, leaving her clothes soaked with blood.
The Messenger of Allah Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. [Bukhari]
Imam ibn Athir records in “Kamil” the famous story of a Muslim woman who was captured by the Romans and held in a place named ‘Amuriyyah.
Khalifa Umar bin Abdul-Aziz sent a letter to the Muslim POWs in Constantinople. He told them:
“You consider yourselves to be POWS. You are not. You are locked in the cause of Allah. I would like you to know that whenever I give something to the Muslims I give more to your families and I am sending so and so with 5 dinars for each one of you and if it wasn’t that I fear the Roman dictator would take it from you I would have sent more. I have also sent so-and-so to secure the release of every single one of you regardless of what the cost would be. So rejoice! Assalamu Alaykum.”
Oh America and its allies! Time is running out for you lots, very soon we Muslim will take action against you, we have recorded all the things you have done to Muslim.
Now it is duty of every Muslim brother and sisters to stand shoulder to shoulder together against our enemies, because present corrupt government will not help you, so you have to act yourself and seize as many as American men and women. Treat them as American treated and treating our Muslim brothers and sisters. This treatment is called Tit for Tate treatment.
All the men should be kept in iron cage, their head covered with black cotton bag, so they could not see the daylight, without clothing and wake them up day and night for a week, with loud music through heads phone and chained them.
All the women should be kept in open prison without clothing, and keep them awake for two to three days and Repeatedly raped all the women and make the movies, posted them on Internet, so every American can see the treatment of their citizen. This way the American will learn their mistake.

In my humble openion this patriotic brigadier is right to slap dishonest so called Professor who is defending a corrept government . The brigadier is defending his Pakistani army. • Abdul Hakeem, February 6, 2010:

This is a shooting land of Napak army, here prime ministers can be sent home, jailed or even murdered but no one from army can held accountable what he (now she also) does, either it is breaking of constitution or selling of people or fighting with, abducting and killing of own people or loyal to western masters against interest of country or sacking and copes against governments or throwing out judges or eating up resources or indulging in politics or involvement of crimes like rape or appointment / deputations / adjustment on basis of association with army. They may be be good in all other roles but not in their assigned legitimate original role. So this case like numerous others will also end like rest. The country is spending on them beyond her capacity but they are waiting a revolution like iran’s, people have gone nose down but they give it a dam. A son of retired colonel is more powerful than an in service chief secretary then where this gentleman stands. I am with this professor and with all others who had or have been suffering because of rotten eggs.

  • JAMAL, February 6, 2010:

Well when Musharaf(the dictator) came into power……we hoped that things will change, as he was an army man and not a politician, but musharaf proved to be worse than these politicians. He gathered all these black listed politicians to make his cabinet and relied on these Dacoits and Thieves and Murderer Polticians(as mentioned by sohail) to run his governoment….so i think Musharaf can be called God father of these (Dacoits and Thieves and Murderer Polticians) or u can call him(CHORO KA SARDAR)…or dalal…whichever name u like.

  • fahad khan, February 6, 2010:

Usman i fully agree with u and jamal.I think we as a nation faced worst consequences whenever these generals were in power.A brief detail is as as under:
    1-Ayub khan/Yahya khan lost East Pakistan .
2-Zia-ul-haq killed Zulfiqar ali bhutto and promoted militancy in paksitan, which we are facing today
3-Musharaf came in and sold pakistan to america for dollars.Killed innocent people in lal masjid and so many other innocent people in swat /waziristan to please america….with hardly any success against terrorist.

Whenever there was a milatary leader in Pakistan whole nation suffered except army people. You mentioned that they cant listen to other people’s views and dont/cant accept freedom of ideas.Well this is understandable because they are trained so…they are not trained to negotiate or find solutions through dialogue ,they are only trained to fight…there exact place is battle field or national borders…But unfortunately they have infiltrated in every field of civilian life.Whenever there was army dictator in power, retired army officers were given high ranking posts in civilian institutions such as for no obvius reasons. They should confine themselves to borders and army cantonment only.

aap ki khidmat ma arz hai k yeh Musharaf aur Army hi thi jis ne Aafia Siddiqui ko “Becha”…………actually aap log pro right wing hain pro dictatorship hain ap ko F.A pass brig se hamdardi hai bt P.hd professr se koi nai….ma aik student hn aur janta hn ke ustaad ka Islam ma kya darga hai….agar aap k khyal ma woh aik so-called teachr hai to mere khyal ma brig b aik so-called brig hai jo baton se to Professor ko hra nai saka to physical tourcher pe utar aya……yeh terrorism hai balke fauj-gardi hai…..
aaj waqt hai ke pore mulk k students uth khare hn…….
civilian k liye merit aur hai aur army wale k liye aur…..yeh badmashi nai to aur kya hai….??

  • Usman Ashraf, February 7, 2010:

fahad bhai you are right bt i want to add one more thing abt Ayub khan that he was also killer of Mohtarma fatima Jinnah…..
This is a kind of social injustice that merit for a civilian student is vey very high but for children of Army officers it’s very low….this type of injustice results in the break down of states…..they are drawing lines between civilians and military persons…..
How can they justify that a retird army officer is capable of performing every job but a civilian is nt…..??
How can they justify that they can indulge into politics bt a politician or a Phd person can’t become a army general???
    there must be equality……

  • Zarmina, February 8, 2010:

We strongly condemned the thrashing of Professor Malik. Unfortunately the teachers had never been politically and militarily victimised. This shows how much we give respect to the teacher who is the maker of future. The teachers who are considered to be healer are being maltreated. Strict action should be taken against the culprits in order to discourage such incidents in future and this matter like the previous cases should not be ended in reconciliation. Army personnel should not consider themselves above the rule of law. The retired brigadier had no right to humiliate a respectable person of the society. This is a matter of shame for the whole nation as teachers are given a special status by our religion and society and they should not be humiliated by anyone at any cost. There is no doubt that the remains of dictatorship are damaging the system like termites, so there is a need to take immediate action to curb such incidents in future by taking strict action against the culprit. President Zardari, in this regard, while taking notice of the incident, had directed to constitute a committee to initiate the inquiry. The investigation committee would question Rector (NUML) Brig (retd) Aziz Ahmed Khan, Registrar Brig (retd) Obaidullah and Professor Tahir Malik and would submit its report to President Asif Ali Zardari. We laud President Zardari’s and PM Gillani’s prompt action towards this issue.

  • fahad khan, February 9, 2010:

well,l i believe if there are any good people left in Pakistan army ,they should consider this incident as a stigma on whole army and should come forward to punish this sick Brig. Rhanja…and improve Pak army image. So far we have not heard anything from Pakistan army/G.H.Q(as expected).
Secondly, why do we need a committee for each and everything thing in our country. Are they any good?Since 1947 we have seen alot of committees being made to look into different issues with no output. These committees are only made to waste time and to fool common man.Its like when governoment doesnot want to take any particular action on the basis of simple ,clear cut evedince(as in this case) …they make a committe ,just to confuse things further …to gain time so that people forget about the issue ,and the end result is (Zubani Jama kharch)…and the culprit gets away with the crime.I believe this is a simple, straight farward case and governoment should have solved this issue by now. What are they waiting for?I am sure nothing will happen at the end … brig. Rhanja will get away with this….if he is punished ,it will be a new chapter in history of pakistan .I hope i am proved wrong and Brig. Rhanja is put to shame before whole pakistani nation.

  • Usman Ashraf, February 9, 2010:

fahad bhai Inshallah we will see a new Pakistan……a Pakistan in which there will be no discrimination….the line between army and civilian shall be removed….lets hope for a new bright and clear morning……May Allah help us…..
Salute to all those strugling for truth and social justice…….Salute to all teachers, building our nation……
