RAWALPINDI - Before joining the legal fraternity’s long march, the members of Ex-Servicemen Society Friday stressed upon President Pervez Musharraf to quit the presidency as he was not a constitutional president and the people had strongly rejected him.
Former chief of army staff General (Retd) Mirza Aslam Baig said this in a Press conference here at Liaqat Bagh on Friday. Baig was flanked by the organisation’s President General (Retd) Faiz Ali Chishti, former Rawalpindi Corps Commander Lieutenant General (Retd) Jamshaid Gulzar Kiyani, former ISI chief General (Retd) Hameed Gul and other members including Ali Kuli Khan, Muhammad Islam, Saleem Haider, Asad Durrani, Naeem Akbar Arshad Malik and Arshad Rauf.
Former army chief said the country had been in crisis for the last few months due to the unconstitutional steps taken by President Pervez Musharraf and those steps had paved the way for a social revolution as the people were aware of their rights. He said the Movement of Pakistan achieved victory through political and diplomatic means and not through bloodshed. The lawyers’ movement had made a common man aware of his basic rights and he would get his due rights through peaceful means, he added.
Appreciating the role of Pakistan Army in the February 18 general elections, Gen Baig said if ISI had meddled in the February 18 elections, the results would not have been different from those of 2002 general elections. “The Army has realised its actual role and distanced itself from the President that has resulted in Americans’ demand for a safe exit of Pervez Musharraf,” he added.
“Our struggle goes beyond the ouster of President Musharraf and we want to make it sure that no future dictator should resort to unconstitutional steps,” Baig said. He said that in the past whenever a popular uprising was started against a ruler, the dictators took over the helm of affairs but this time the people were more aware and vigilant to thwart such kind of adventurism. He maintained that the judges would be restored.
Criticising the prevalent judicial system, the ex-servicemen said that in the present system the rich could get way for their wrongdoings but the poor had to pay the price for what they hadn’t done. They maintained that the PCO judges should not be removed and the demands of the lawyers must be fulfilled.
Condemning the American attack on an army picket in Mohmand Agency, they said the government should take up the matter with the allies and denounce the attack in the strongest words. They appreciated the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kiyani for openly criticising the attacks of allied forces in Pakistani territory.
Online adds: Ex-Servicemen Society has called upon Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to immediately issue court-martial orders for Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf and he be tried for his role as US ally in war on terror, blood carnage in Lal Masjid and other issues including Kargil debacle.
Chishti said Musharraf was not a constitutional President, therefore, he should step down immediately. Describing US attack on Mohmand Agency a national tragedy and a matter of serious concern, he said the need was there that matter be investigated thoroughly. “We have no objection on war on terror. But we demand that people be first of all made aware of definition of war on terror.”
The salient feature of the movement which was started 15 months back, was that it would not be violent movement and it was green revolution in real sense, he said.
