Judges send back Sharifs’ case to Cheif Election Commissioner

May 31, 2008

LAHORE: The by-poll bids of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif have once again seen split judgment by the Lahore High Court’s election tribunal on Saturday.

Following a split decision over the appeals against Sharif brothers’ nominations by the two judges’ election tribunal the case sent back to the chief election commissioner to decide the matter.

Justice Akram Qureshi, a member of the tribunal, in his verdict said the nomination papers of Sharif brothers were wrongfully accepted declaring them ineligible to contest the elections.

Another member of the tribunal Justice Hafiz Tariq Naseem in his decision said the nominations are correct and declared Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif eligible to contest the polls.

Ashtar Aosaf, the lawyer of Sharif brothers, talking to newsmen said the chief election commissioner could constitute election tribunals but he has no powers to take decisions. The tribunal can neither sent the matter back to the chief election commissioner nor the CEC can revise the verdict, he said. The counsel believes a split decision means Sharifs could contest the elections.

Rupee comes back strongly versus dollar in the open market

Rupee continued to make recovery against the US dollar in the open market today. The US dollar started off new day’s trading at Rs.68/50, shed major grounds and was trading at Rs.68/00 at close of markets on Thursday. Thus, rupee ended the day on upbeat note versus dollar in the kerb dealings.

On the international desks, the dollar rose to a two-week high against the euro after Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Richard Fisher said the central bank will raise interest rates should consumers expect faster inflation.

The currency gained for a fourth day against the yen before a U.S. government report today that will probably show the economy grew at a faster pace than initially estimated last quarter. The yen fell against the Australian dollar and was near a one-month low versus the euro as stock gains encouraged the purchase of higher-yielding assets funded in the Japanese currency.
